I Might've Been Born Again
VIRGIN DAY SPECIAL. "I'm ready to feel like I don't have the answers" -Lorde
Author’s Note: HAPPY VIRGIN RELEASE DAY EVERYONE!!! This poem is After Hammer.
I started writing pop music poetry during the Solar Power era (I love that album fight me) before I even knew what Substack was!! I’m so excited to be able to share my thoughts and feelings on Virgin with you all in real time. I have a feeling this won’t be the only Lorde poem I write this year. . . let’s ride this out together.
i’ve spent too many summers celibate swimming naked with no one decency overlaying my options. the first time i bleached my hair chlorine recoded me swamp wench water combed its cool green dip dye against my breasts. i liked boys except a boy would never be a mermaid. boys went on virginity seeking incubus levitation piss in the pool while making out with you tours. things could’ve turned out scandalous for them except i was born arriving & always arriving. everything still made new again. the horizon still bleeds blood orange into gray like god. the clouds forget themselves watching me i shave my head so the sun truly bathes me. this time love will be only semi aquatic. i go the everglades to play platonic mermaids with the gators & a girl. we eat shrimp i turn pink. peony open, being scorched by a solstice longest day intimates summer keeps coming back for more of me what if i’m full of it? that girl on fire screaming through the house jumps out your window floats up just fine after a cold plunge. petals unchanged except now she is everywhere.
A fine and fun poem which I enjoyed reading. It's a great day when, if you can't make a poem you can read one that stops you going out of your mind. Thank you
Awesome! I really enjoyed this. It’s been fun watching the Lorde excitement in people this year and I’ve contagiously gotten excited too… looking forward to more 🤘
